Praying in one direction, the direction towards the Kaaba, is traditionally considered to be symbol of the unity of all Muslims worldwide under the law of God. To grow this feeling of brotherhood into the minds is why this rule was introduced.
This is the ritual worship of praying as preached by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It symbolizes that Muslims should be disciplened, they should be supporting each other shoulder to shoulder, and that they should be following their leader (in what is not against God commands and/or His prophet Muhammad guides).
