Salah, or prayer, is one of the five pillars of Islam, and is performed by a Muslim in order to get closer to God (Allah in Arabic), to ask for forgiveness of sins, and to make supplications. Salah is the sign of the believer, and in the Qur'an, in the 71st verse of the 9th chapter:

"The believers, men and women, are protecting friends of one another; they enjoin good and forbid evil, and they establish Salah, and give Zakah, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah will have His Mercy on them, and surely, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise."

Salah also washes away sin, and there is a hadith, or saying of the Prophet Muhammad (S), in Sahih al-Bukhari, that says:

Abu Huraira (may Allah bless him) narrates that once Muhammad asked his companions, 'Do you think that dirt can remain on a person bathing five times a day in a brook running in front of his door?' 'No', replied the companions, 'No dirt can remain on his body.' Muhammad remarked: 'So, exactly similar is the effect of salat offered five times a day. With the grace of Allah, it washes away all the sins'
