Why do Muslims were white robes when they visit mecca?

The reason why the Muslim males who are making the pilgrimage wear white is because this particular kind of clothing was prescribed by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). So it becomes compulsory for Muslims to follow that rule. Some Islamic scholars have stated that the probable reason for this was to eliminate discrimination between Muslims at Makkah (since all Muslims are equal in brotherhood whether they are a king or a commoner or black or white etc).

Note: Only Muslim males have to wear white (called Ihram). Women can wear normal clothing. Furthermore it is compulsory only if they are making the pilgrimage. Otherwise if they are just visiting Makkah without intending to do the pilgrimage, then they do not have to wear white.

The Muslims visit Mecca to perform Umrah or Hajj. Umrah may be performed any time of the year. They wear two untailored white sheets of cloth during Umrah or Hajj. The white robes teach uniformity, unity, simplicity, humility before Almighty Allah, being an equal member of Muslim Ummah. On the other hand, these robes symbolize death, coffin, life after death and appearing before Almighty Allah for judgment on the Day of Judgment. Hajj is performed during the last month of the Islamic calendar. They teach equality, simplicity, sacrifice, tolerance and charity etc. It was renewed by the last Prophet of Islam Hazrat Muhammad (SAW). Only the Muslim Ummah performs Hajj which is obligatory on each Muslim.
