The large size of the House generally prevents representatives from gaining as much notice and public exposure as members of the Senate attract. Senators, and especially those who have presidential ambitions, are better able to capture national media attention. Over the past several elections, the Senate has emerged as a prime source of contenders for the presidential nomination in both parties. Senators find it easier to establish themselves as the champions of public policies that appeal to large segments of the American people. Senators are also more likely to be covered by the media in their States. They tend to have more clout in their state's politics than that enjoyed by members of the lower house.
It's probably because there are 4.35 as many House members as there are Senators, so it's harder for a Senator to get lost in the crowd.

Senators are less numerous and there are only 2 per state, where there can be dozens of House Representatives in high population states. It is also much harder to become a Senator than to become a House Representative.

Senators have more prestige because they serve longer terms and there are stricter qualifications for them to serve. There are only two per state, so there are less of them.

What do you think the requirements for serving in the Senate are stricter than those for serving in the House of Representatives?

The Senate is considered the higher house of Congress, so being a Senator is more prestigious than being a Representative, as well as having stricter requirements.

Which house of congress is more prestigious?

in many respects the senate is more prestigious than the house: * Senators represent the whole state * Senators serve 6 years * Their vote counts for more as they are one of a hundred, not one of 435. * Senators are more likely to chair a committee * House members often seek election to the Senate * Senate is a better base for launching a presidential base (e.g. '08 McCain and Obama) * Senators are often chosen as vice-presidential candidates (e.g. '08 Biden) * Age limits * Senate has more significant exclusive powers - treaty appointment and ratification. However House has greater authority as they have stronger mandate: * elected more frequently ( every two years compared to every six) * has powerful standing committees * play a larger representative role. How would you describe the Roman senate?

It depended on the attitudes of the emperor. Some emperors respected the senate, some scorned it. Although the senators were still important and could influence politics and conspire against emperors, during the period of rule by emperors, the senate was largely turned into an instrument for the emperor's rule. It was no longer as prestigious as it had been during the republican period.

Who is the most formal in congress house or senate?

It depends on what you mean by "formal." The House has more formal rules. Bills can only be discussed for a certain period of time, they will be heard at certain dates/times, only relevant discussion is permitted, and etc. The formality here is that most bills follow the same formal pattern through the house. The Senate is the more prestigious house. The rules here are relaxed. There are only 100 of them, they have 6 year terms, and etc, so they're seen, in a sense, as more formal/prestigious. --Charlie G.

Were there senators when Augustus was emporer?

Yes, the senate was a Roman tradition and was carried into the principate. However it had little or no authority, and was merely a rubber stamp for the emperors. Some trials could still be held in the senate and they could pass resolutions and to be a senator was still a prestigious position, but the open debate on proposed laws was no longer an option.Yes, the senate was a Roman tradition and was carried into the principate.
