Because back in the old days, boat was the only way of transport. Big river meant rich city because a lot of trade. They name city after river for this.

Not quite accurate. Cities were NOT named after a river. This naming convention came into being because the town or city in question had the river running through it (or very close to it). Hence, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, is actually named after the (new) castle in the city, and the river Tyne runs through the centre of Newcastle / Gateshead.

Similarly with Stoke0on-Trent: the river Trent runs through the city, but the sity is named with reference to the pottery trade (as in 'Stoking of kilns)

Not all cities with rivers are named this way: The river Wear runs through Sunderland, but the city is NOT referred to as 'Sunderland-on-Wear'. Likewise, The city of York and the river Ouse ... and perhaps most obviously, London and the River Thames!
