Photosynthesis needs light, water, and oxygen. Soil is where the water is, along with other minerals. So yes plants do need soil, unless they have an alternative source for water and those minerals (as in hydroponic farms). Under normal circumstances though, taking a plant out of the soil is effectively condemning it to death.

∙ 15y agoNO, plants do not need soil to grow. They do require some trace elements found in the soil to grow well but these can be supplied in a growth media as is used when growing plants hydroponically.

Neither is soil needed for photosynthesis a process that uses light water and atmospheric carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and sugars. Examples of plants growing in nature without soil include:
- Sea growing plants like algae and other seaweeds are a natural plant ecosystem that uses no soil.
- Most terrestrial plants however do use soil. Mistletoe, Spanish Moss are typically found growing on trees with no soil.
- Many fungi grow on surfaces other than soil. The do not however have the process of photosynthesis.
- The air fern is often thought to be a soil free plant but is actually a colony of animals

∙ 7y agoActually, plants CAN grow without soil- but soil serves as an anchor to hold the plant in place, and it stores water and fertilizer that the plant absorbs through the roots. With some plants (like potatoes) soil serves to block light from parts of the plant so they do not turn green (which is unhealthy)
