fontanels (:
the fontanels
Well, first of all.Fontanelsare spot spots in the skull that allows the skull to expand as the brain increases in size & also helps the fetal skull flex and squeeze through the birth canal during delivery. Adults lack fontanels because by the time you are an adult, your brain is already fully developed and by the age of four, most of the bones in the skull have ossified across the their fontanels.
There are no soft bones, just incompletely ossified joints such as the fontanels of the skull and the growth plates of the long bones.
At birth, many regions of the newborn's skull have not yet been converted to bone, leaving "soft spots" known as fontanels. So the baby's head is not hard but can be shaped after the birthcanal. That changes back later to normal headshape.
6 fontanels but 2 are very popular
Infants have two soft openings within the skull called fontanels. These will usually close completely by about the 18 month of age.
The soft spots are called fontanelles. They occur at the fibrous sutures (joints) between the plates of the skull, and usually fuse with bone (ossify) within the first two years after birth. The spacing between the skull plates is necessary for proper expansion as the brain grows.
An adult soft spot is usually a soft spot found on the side of the skull, instead of the fontanel that are found in an infant's skull. What the adult soft spot does, it actually supports the skull; avoiding a severe head injury.
The soft spots allow the skull to be compressed during birth.
because it is a baby.
