Because when you're around 14 you start to realise you want to be treated more as an adult then a child.

Parents realise this and treat their teenagers as responsible adults.

This doesn't mean giving them what they want, it means giving them both rights and responsibilities to help them mature into real adults.

That's why.

In the United States, they are not considered adults until the age of 18. Though at the age of 16, they may in some states consent to sex, or get a driver's license, or hold a job, or drop out of school.

Parents treat 16 and 17yr. olds like adults because your parents won't support your butt forever and they want you to learn things on your own such as responsibilities, maturity, and getting you ready for the real world. And they can't do your job and pay your bills so they are doing you a big favor in the long run.

Because sometimes they are overprotective and don't know how to control themselves. Or sometimes they don't want to see their children grow up so they treat like children hoping to never let them go.

  • Most parents whether rich; middle class or poor (especially the mother as she gave birth to her children) have a strong bond with their children and either the mother or both parents have been there to see their children grow; seen them through illness; protected them; helped them in any way possible in life and molded them to be strong, independent good citizens and wish them all the success in the world. That bond never goes away and because of the age difference and the love the parents have for their grown children they prefer to remember their children as just that ... children and still want to help in any way they can and the bond will never stop and it is not meant as disrespect towards their children or they think their children are immature or not doing well in the world, but the simple fact parents still want to help their children. Whether the grown adult is being treated as a child be thankful a parent cares enough to interfere at times.

Do teenagers need to rebel in order to grow up?

Many cultures have a coming of age ritual for adolescents. This is an important acknowledgment of the transition into adulthood. Often, this is lacking and parents / caregivers continue to treat adolescents and young adults like children. Since they are no longer children, this outdated authority is uncomfortable for them and the result is rebellion. In short, if parenting styles adapt to the changing maturity levels appropriately, children can grow into healthy adults without rebellion. Hope this makes sense.
