Gypsies and "Travellers", whom call themselves "gypsies", are entirely different. Gypsies (or "Romany's) are a purebred ancient group of peoples driven out of India hundreds of years ago , settling in Romania, and travelling eventually around Europe, living off the land, making and mending for the general public. Hated universally for their unorthodox way of life. They speak their own language, and rarely marry "out". The stereotypical wagon and horse were Romany.

The people on TV programmes, such as Big Fat Gypsy wedding, are NOT Gypsies, but Irish Tinkers, whom came over from Ireland in the 19th century. They were street people, street fighters, opportunists, working fairgrounds, also sharpening knives and shining pots for big houses in cities and towns. Later "hawking" ordinary family homes. They speak with an Irish broag because they are insular and stay within their own group. So diversity of the accent has never evolved, due to their self styled isolation.

Because the 'Gypsies' you're referring to aren't actual Gypsies. Gypsies are Roma and Gorami people, typically of the Balkan states and other regions which were formerly part of the Ottoman Empire, and are descended from the Jannisaries. Irish Travelers are from the Irish diaspora, and come from people who've emigrated from Ireland and pretty much formed their own communities and refused to assimilate. They were dubbed as 'Gypsies' disparagingly.

How do you speak with a southern Irish accent?

That question is impossible to answer. First of all, there are many accents in Ireland, so there is no such thing as a southern Irish accent. There are lots of very different accents in the south of Ireland. Secondly, you cannot in writing explain an accent. You can only have an idea of an accent by hearing it. You would need to hear a genuine Irish accent, not something in a movie where actors are trying to put on an accent. You can try to tune into some Irish television or radio online or some video websites of genuine Irish people.

Is the Irish accent as clear as it is in films etc or is it more flat?

the Irish accent you here in most films is actually a dublin accent, i come from derry and although the accent has some simalilarities is isn't the same, and it is the same for all the counties, each county has its own accent. and the dublin accents you here on tv are pretty much the same as the natural dublin accent, except the natural accent may be a bit rougher. Whenever I hear a foreign actor doing an Irish actor I recognise it as an Irish accent. However there is not one person in the country who would talk like that. I don't know how you think its a Dublin accent mate. Most Irish accents in movies are bull. They're either a bad Northern Ireland accent on a guy who, predictably, was "in the I.R.A." or a very terrible, barely recognizable Connaught accent, exagerated so it sounds like a leprechaun. IRISH ACCENTS IN MOVIES ARE NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING. Bear in mind the Beatles. They all had godawful Scouse (Liverpool Irish) accents, but affected "American" accents for vocals and interviews. Then watch "The Commitments"
