1) To improve the strength and hardness of metals,

2) To lower the melting point of the metal,

3) To improve the appearance of the metal and,

4) To improve the resistance of metals against rusting and corrosion.

Now, answering the question is much easier for, keeping in your head what is in the above, we can say that:

a) Alloys are designed to have properties that are more desirable than those of the elements they contain.

b) Properties such as strength and corrosion resistance may be considerably greater for an alloy than those of the elements they contain.

This is why alloys are more widely used than pure metals.

because an alloy is two metals combined while a metal is just itself. An alloy could be potassium and gold. Let's use melting points as an example, they have two completely different melting points and they are together so there traits will blend. When they're apart their melting points will be completely different.

When we consider dopping ,It is a process of adding some foreign material in crystal lattice.when we add one ion or metal in another crystal lattice the property of dopped crystal will be different from the element,as because of dopped particles.this is one of the reason.

Compounds are products formed by chemical reaction between elements. A compound is not a mixture but a new substance, having different properties from its constituent elements.

For example, sodium chloride, common salt, is a compound of sodium (a soft silvery metal) and chlorine (a greenish gas). It doesn't look or behave like either of its constituents.
