Spectroscopy is used in astronomy to learn what is happening in stars etc. By studying electromagnetic waves radiated from nuclei, one can learn a lot about the shape and activity of a nucleus. This helps us understand why certain reactions in stars happen. It is also used to identify nuclei. Every nucleus is has a unique decay scheme, which is always the same, eg some nucleus decaying to a ground state via a 200keV gamma ray, will be observed in all nuclei of the same mass and proton number.

If these gamma rays are observed, this means 12C is present

Instrument used by astronomers to spread light?

A spectroscope is used to diffuse the light from a star into its spectrum, so that astronomers can analyze the elements that make up the star. The same sort of instrument can be used to analyze the elemental composition of ANYTHING; for terrestrial uses, the instrument is called a spectroGRAPH.

How does a spectrograph provide information about stars chemical composition?

A spectrograph is an instrument for chemical analysis.

What instrument do the astronomers use to determine the chemical composition of a star?

They use a spectrograph to pass light through a prism to break it the light waves into its constituent colors. Then by looking at what colors are missing they can determine both the temperature and composition of the star.
