Because newborn babies have baby fat on them. When a baby is still inside the mother's womb, the fetus is in a position that it has it's legs crossed. The reason why for this is because the baby, however doesn't have enough room to move around that much. Since it is crowed in the womb, the baby cannot stretch out it's legs. When the child just comes out of it's mother the child's legs are still bent a little bit but the baby can still stretch out its legs but not that far. This is why newborn babies' joints at the part that bends form a V.
