Because, when a human being is born, most of the larger bones (such as in the skull) aren't fused. It allows flexibility during birth, so that the baby can pass through the pelvis and vagina. As the baby ages, the bones begin to fuse, leading to fewer bones.

When one gets to be around 50 years old, they usually start having bone loss because it becomes harder for the body to absorb calcium. Bones can either start thinning (Osteopenia), or start to lose minerals and begin to degrade (Osteoporosis).
