Type one and Type two are not the same thing. Type one occurs because the pancreas does not either produce insulin, or not enough insulin to counter the amount/types of sugar that enter into the body. Simply and complex sugars can and are found in everything from bread to can. Anything that is not a protein, fat, water are considered to be carbohydrates and in turn, break down in your body to varying degrees.
Type two on the other hand occurs because the sugar does not go into the cells for use. As my husbands doctor worded it, "the brooms are not working to push the sugar into the cells for use. The sugar is staying in the blood and unable to be used"
Two different disease, that require different treatments. On a side note, we were advised that type two can become type one in the event that the pancreas becomes "exhausted" and no longer works. Typically, type 1 requires insulin supplement and often times a pump is given as an option. Other times, insulin injections suffice.
Type two, can often be controlled by diet and exercise. Depending on the severity, it may require medicine "pills" to assist the pancreas in handling the sugar that remains in the blood.
Both types of Diabetes require monitoring the levels of blood sugar, in order to adjust the amount of insulin that is given, be it in the pill form or insulin. One advantage to type two, is that you can learn where the "hidden" sugars are in the foods you it. You may find that you are more sensitive to one type of sugar over another.
While you didn't ask, there is a third type of diabetes if one is to consider "gestational" diabetes. This form comes with pregnancy and often is never seen again. The reoccurs will occur if the mom doesn't keep sugars at a minimum. If gestational diabetes is to become type two, it normal occurs within 10 years of gestational diabetes.
