Back when buttons were first invented only the rich could afford to wear them. Rich men dressed themselves, and since having the buttons on the right shirt favors the right hand, they were placed there. Rich women were dressed by their ladies in waiting, so the buttons were placed on the left side so that it would be easier for the right-handed ladies in waiting to button them. By the time buttons were popular enough that everybody could wear them, clothing makers were used to putting the buttons on the right side of men's clothes and the left side of women's clothes.

Female western shirt having buttons on left and men's having on right side in traditional shirt?

Q Why do women's shirts button on the opposite side than a man's? A Way back in Medieval times, women did not usually dress themselves. They had handmaids to help them. Therefore the dressmakers designed the garments so the buttons were in the proper position for the dressers, the person USING the buttons. The tradition continued throughout the ages and even into today's styles. Source: Wave Shoppe Hawaiian Shirts

Are buttons on a woman shirt on the left?

Yes. Buttons for a women's blouse are on the right, while buttons for a man's shirt are on the left. This is a holdover from when women were typically dressed by a servant, and buttons on the right make it easier for a right handed person to handle them.

Why do men's shirts button on the opposite side of women's?

The practice of buttoning men's shirts on the right side and women's shirts on the left side dates back to the 19th century. It is believed to have originated from a time when wealthy women were dressed by servants, who found it easier to button shirts from their own perspective. Over time, this tradition stuck and became standardized as a gendered distinction in clothing.

Why are men and women shirts button differently?

For Men. A fact that really has nothing to do with buttons but is interesting: Years ago when men wore wraps. The swords hung on their left, because they were right handed. It was noted that if the wrap was right over left when they drew the sword they would be exposed. To remedy this situation the left was wrapped over the right. Now as far as buttons: Most people are right handed, And it was noted that if the left is over the right, holes left side buttons right, it was easier to button. Now far Women: We will go back to the 13th-14th century. Men were dressing themselves, but the women of class had servants to help them get dressed. The clothing also was designed and sewed by the same servant. To make it easier for the servant to dress their master they put the buttons on the left. So at that time the left/right button issue was based on practicality

What side is a man's buttons on?

Why do womens shirts button differently?

The only credible explanation I have heard is this:Most people are right handed, so the buttons should be manipulated with the right hand.Men dress themselves, so the buttons are on the right-hand side.Women (I should say 'rich women who lived a few hundred years ago') had someone, like a maid, to dress them. Someone standing in front of the lady would button her clothing, so the buttons should be on the maid's right-hand side. Therefore the buttons are on the left-hand side for the person wearing the garment. This difference just became accepted in the clothing industry, and has persisted to this day (although perhaps some clothing designers like the idea of being able to take off women's clothing more easily).
