∙ 15y agoWhen a glass jar is placed over a candle, the jar effectively eliminates the supply of air (oxygen) to the flame. Once all the oxygen in the jar is consumed in the combustion reaction, the flame goes out since the reaction has consumed the limiting reagent.

∙ 14y agoAs soon as you cover a flame with a container the oxygen in the container is used by the flame. because hot gas goes up the glass ends up being filled with hot gasses that has no oxygen in it. for a candle to but it requires a constant supply of oxygen so it goes out.

∙ 8y agoThe burning of the candle is a form of oxidation (combustion) that chemically combines the hydrocarbons in the candle with oxygen in the air, generating light and heat. Once most of the oxygen under the glass cover is depleted, the reaction stops due to lack of oxygen.
Leaving a small airspace below the glass will usually allow more oxygen to flow in, and reaction products (mainly carbon dioxide and water) to flow out.
