Car batteries contain cells. The cells are attached to each other to create the battery. Each cell contains electrodes or things that look something like small plates. The cells also contain sulphuric acid. When the battery produces electricity, the chemicals in the plates dissolve in the sulphuric acid. When the battery recharges, the chemicals go back into the plates. The chemicals do not go back perfectly. Eventually, some drop to the bottom of the cell and can not be used. When too many drop off, the cell may develop a short circuit and become useless or the plate may become so small it can not produce enough electricity. They fact that you live on a New York street with a pot hole every three

feet and it jars your battery to pieces also ruins your battery!

The common, Lead-Acid car battery contains a lot of lead that can (and MUST) be recycled. Most of the Lead used for fabricating new car batteries comes from recycling.
