∙ 11y agoThe third eyelid remains from when cats lived in dustier environments and was meant to protect the eye from damage. If a cat is relaxed, the third eyelid sometimes becomes partially visible. If the third eyelid is showing most or all of the time, or if it shows further on one eye than the other, it may be injured or infected, which would make it hurt to retract. In a case like that take the cat to see a vet. If it's injured beyond repair the third eyelid can be surgically removed, since it is not really needed by the cat.
