In general, things that irritate the diaphragm cause hiccups. Examples include: (1) eating very quickly; (2) eating something that is hot in tandem with drinking a cold liquid such as water, milk, etc,: (3) sobbing or crying; (4) eating very spicy or hot (high temperature) food as well as extreme coughing and/or laughter.

Hiccups occur when nerves in your body get confused. There are several body parts, the lungs, chest and diaphram, that have to work together for you to breath. When they don't work together it causes hiccups. It isn't dangerous, just annoying.
