I rolled or rocked myself to sleep since I was an infant until I joined the Navy and had to quit because of embarrassment. My identical twin also required rolling in order to get to sleep. We also sang to ourselves or hummed tunes along with the rolling. Several years ago when the horrors of Romanian Orphanages were exposed to the west, it was discovered that the majority of orphans rolled themselves to sleep at night. The cause was suspected to be the lack of physical affection and their emotional needs not being met.
In the case of my twin and myself suffering from the lack of maternal affection and being subjected to constant and continual mental and physical abuse from our birth mother we found that rolling comforted us and lulled us to sleep.
