Christians are getting this mainly from the creation story, which says that humans are created in the image and likeness of God. Although most groups do not interpret this story literally, all groups believe that it has importance in its message. Christians use it to show that humans are God's special race, which was meant to love God and be sort of God's companions on earth. Also, Christians take Jesus's commandment to love one another and use it to mean, "All humans deserve God's love, because they are God's special race." (Are they correct? That's for you to decide.)

Some Christians may deny the existence of Neanderthal man due to conflicting beliefs with the theory of human evolution. They may interpret the account of creation in the Bible differently and believe that humans were created in the image of God without any evolutionary process. This denial is based on religious interpretations rather than scientific evidence.
