The best explanation I've read is the "Big Man Theory." A fundamental instinct may exist in human beings to elevate a member of their own population to a position of social dominance. This instinct has been handed down from thousands of generations of human and even pre-human society. Most social animals live in groups with a pecking order.

To be more specific to the question, we don't NEED leaders to be useful and productive. Anybody who has ever worked in an office when the boss is away can attest that the place works as well, if not better, without his or her presence.

But a threat or disturbance to a social group, and the "Big Man" instinct kicks in. As in the example above, if something goes wrong while the boss is away, who do you go to to fix it? Another boss.

Leaders are needed in order for us to have a republic were representatives can vote in the house for what we want. Plus, with out leaders to lead us we would live in a place like Iraq not to be judgemental or anything ,but do we really want a bombing happening every 3 seconds. I don't think we do. Everyday leaders help us in everyday life allowing us to have a normal life without bombings. Hope this answers your question.
