Why do crocodiles lie concealed in water for long periods of times?

Whilst crocodiles seem to sleep a lot - do not be fooled - as very often they only appear to be sleeping.

They sleep intermittently during the day & night, but without entering the R.E.M. state (which in humans is a deep, dreamlike sleep where the eyes appear to move randomly & rapidly - hence 'Rapid Eye Movement').

Instead, crocs are wired to wake up at the slightest disturbance - they'll be aware of you before you get close enough catch them asleep!

Crocodiles are nocturnal animals, but they sleep in the day too. Because they are cold-blooded reptiles, they need the heat of the sun to power their bodies & accelerate their metabolism.

A large crocodile can bring down a full-grown zebra or wildebeest by ambushing it from the water as it is drinking from the edge of a lake or river. Crocodiles use land primarily to bask in the sun. Though being large, a huge crocodile can survive on just one or two kilograms of meat a week, because they can gain energy directly from the sun. When a crocodile is in the water, it is usually floating like a log, with only its eyes, nostrils, and a small portion of its back visible above the water. In this way it can breath while spending a good portion of the day in the water.
