Why do delegates meet?

A delegate is someone who attends a meeting or conference to represent an organisation. Anyone who is a representative for an organisation is a delegate.


For example, the Republican and Democratic parties have delegates. In the primaries people vote for the delegates. The delegates represent the people and vote on who will be the front runner of the party.


For another example, the US Scripps National Spelling Bee has kids from schools all across the country. The winners slowly move up the levels to the finals. The finalists are delegates, kids sent to represent their schools.


Here is a final example. in the Olympics the athletes are delegates participating in sports to represent their countries.
