It's called "caching" (cashing). Foxes do it when they see a good opportunity to catch a meal, but they aren't hungry at the time, so they save it for later by burying the food underground so that other animals won't get it. Dogs don't have dirt to bury it under when inside the house, so they use blankets, rugs, toys, and anything else that is movable to cover it up.

It is a natural instinct from in the wild to preserve food that's left over, to eat another day when there might be no food available and to hide them from other dogs so they can't eat them. They also may not be hungry and want to save it for later but make sure no other dogs or anyone will take them.

Well, my dog Riley likes to hide a lot during storms because he is afraid. But for other reasons it is kind of like he is playing "hide and go seek" with you!

Its just to be playfull with themselves and because a ferrets natural habitat is the outdoors so they are just natural food hiders
