Why do dogs stink when they're wet and which one smells the worst?

As for why, I don't know, but I hear Golden Retrievers smell the worst. Male dogs (all sizes) have a heavier scent to them than females from the oil in their skin. I would think it goes back to "dogs in packs" before they were tamed. Dogs of any size should be well groomed. During the winter months bathe your dog every 2 - 3 months (leave indoors to dry by air if the dog is short-haired or blow dry on low setting if the dog is long haired.) Also there are dry shampoos that can be used and brushed into the fur giving your dog a fresh smell. Oatmeal shampoos are excellent and leave their skin feeling good and not irritated. Bathing too often can take the oils away. Brushing your dog every couple of days is also good for the coat and the choice of food can make a difference and most importantly, your dog should have plenty of fresh water available (this will also help.) In the summer your dog should be bathed about every 7 - 8 weeks, but if you are very active with your dog you could bathe them more often. My husband and I take our dogs to the "doggy beach" which is a lake for dogs and we prefer to bathe our dogs when we get home because like some people, dogs will poop and pee in the water. Air drying is usually better because blow drying can strip the oils in their skin during hot summer months. Get the right tools (combs, scissors) for mats in the dogs fur and a good nylon brush. Every couple of days make a habit (even while watching TV) of grooming your dog with the brush. They generally love it! Think of it this way. You are out at a smoke-filled club for the evening. You come home and shower and just wet your hair (the smoke is stronger) but when you add the shampoo and rinse your hair it smells fresh. I have a Pekingese (which is a type of small dog) that smells like dead fish when she is wet! (yuck!)
