Dogs yawn as a way to calm themselves when they are stressed. An agility dog (dog that does agility tricks) will often yawn just before he does his run as a way to "stretch", or loosen himself up before doing his run.

If you have a dog that yawns during obedience classes, it indicates a need for him to be there, and over time he will become less stressed and more relaxed and you will find him yawning less and less. Dogs and other mammals (and some non-mammals) yawn for the same reason that people do: it is a reflexive action due to a lack of oxygen in one's system (most people breathe more slowly when they are tired or bored, which causes a lack of oxygen, which then causes yawning).
