Pods form protection, yes, but that isn't the main function of the pod, it is a side bonus. The main purpose of the pod is feeding and breeding. Dolphins have been observed to corral fish together using powerful sound blasts and tail slaps to make it easier for everyone in the pod to eat. They work together to teach infant dolphins how to behave and live in the ocean. When breeding time comes around for the females, having pods makes it easier for the male pods to find them and create baby dolphins.

Because they want to be safe from their predators

Dolphins swim in groups as a protection mechanism. They also use the help of other dolphins when they are looking for food.
