They usually don't. There are often earthquakes before volcanic eruptions caused by the movement of magma underground. This same movement of magma may lead to an eruption. In a few cases, though earthquakes may trigger eruptions. There are a few proposed mechanisms. Some thing that the vibrations of the earthquake may disturb gasses in the magma chanber, triggering movement that can lead to an eruption. Others thing that stretching of the crust, which occurs with some earthquakes, decrompresses magma, allowing it to rise. In some cases deformation of the crust may cause new cracks to form in the rock, provideing a pathway for magma to follow to the surface.

Volcanoes trigger small earthquakes due to the movement of magma under very high pressure within the ground. This causes hydraulic fracturing of the rockmass surrounding the magma chamber which in turn leads to seismicity (earthquakes). The high pressure of the magma can also cause bulging of the earth's surface around the volcano. This deformation can also cause earthquakes.
