Because you are still performing a legitimate edit - It doesn't matter whether its your own contributions or someone else's.
'Split Contributions' is the short-hand term for having the amount of contributions for a specific action totaled on your profile. If you go to any profile (including your own if you have an account), you will see that it shows how many answers, edits, etc., were made by a single contributor, and then the grand total.
To find your contributions, you can use the link on the blue bar to the left; titled "My Contributions".
There is no default editing code for Everybody Edits. Each level has it's own editing code that is set by the owner.
