In general, electrons do not stick together well at all. In fact each electron repels every other electron. Electrons pack into high densities in atoms because each electron is attracted to the positive charge of the atom's nucleus more strongly than it is repelled by the other electrons in the atom.

How is an ionic bond held together?

It is held together by electrostatic attraction between the ions in the compound. In the bond, there is a complete transfer of electrons between the atoms, so this makes the cation lose electrons and the anion gain electrons. The cation becomes positive and the anion becomes negative, and therefore there is a large attraction between the atoms.

What is the difference between detergent and fabric softener?

Detergent washes the items you put into the washing machine. Fabric softener removes the static electricity from the clothes so they don't stick together. It usually adds a scent to the clothing as well.

Why are metals have high elctrical conductivity?

Metals have high electrical conductivity because they have alot of free mobile electrons. Metals have metallic bonding in which a sea of electrons is created. It is this sea of electrons that enables metals to conduct electricity so well.

What are two ways electrons can be gained or lost from an atom?

An electron can be gained or lost from an atom for two reasons: 1. A random number of atoms can be close together will have electrons bumping into each other. Since all electrons have a negative charge, they will have magnetic effects on one another, and will push eachother of the outer shell of their atoms and into different ones. 2.Two or more atoms can bond together so that both atoms in turn have a balanced number of electrons.

How do elements share electrons?

Well in chemical bonds between two atoms there are single (2 electrons shared), double (4 electrons shared) triple 6 electrons shared and quadruple bonds (8 electrons) shared.Where electrons are delocalised across more than 2 atoms, then many electrons can be shared- the ultimate is a metal where in a solid sample of a metallic element all of the valence electrons of each atom are shared so that number is very large.

How does water stick together so well?

The property of surface tension causes water to occupy the least possible surface area, or to put it simply, "stick together".

How many core electrons does phosphorus have?

well core electrons is the number of total electrons minus valence electrons so.......Phosphorus has 18 electrons and 5 valence electrons so 18 - 5 = 13 so there are 13 core electrons

Does cotton felt?

No, not in the same way that wool felts. Cotton lacks the 'hooks' that wool contains, so cotton doesn't 'stick together' as well as does wool.

Why is O2 bonded together?

Because each O has 6 valence electrons and they each want 2 more. So, they get together and they share the 2 electrons making it O2, i.e. two oxygen atoms bonded together by sharing 2 electrons.

When a shirt and a sock from the dryer stick together what does this tell you about them?

When clothes are in the dryer and they tumble they create friction causing the electrons of an atom to build up on the sock , creating static electricity which creates a negative charge. The shirt is still uncharged, so when they come out of the dryer the socks negative charge attracts the protons in the shirt making them stick together. It is also known as induction.
