Roots not only provide nutrients to the tree but they also act as anchors so the roots will spread as far as is required to reach the nutrients and will also be in proportion to the height of the tree.

There is no reason for evergreen trees to only live for 10-20 years. Most evergreens given reasonable care will live much longer.
