Best Answer

To check for ailments like pink eye, cancer eye, foreign objects in the eye, etc. A producer won't check a cow's eyes unless there's something noticeably abnormal about the animal's eyes or around the eyes themselves, like excessive tears, for instance.

Why do cows wear bells in Switzerland?

So the farmers can find them again. In the spring, after the snow melts, the cows are herded up into the mountains and feed on the mountain meadow grass all summer. This land is all 'common land' (owned by the village) and all the farmers send their cows to the villages land. In Autumn, the farmers have to get the cows back down to the valley before the snow starts. The bells allow the farmers to find the cows even if they are out of sight behind a rock, in a small valley or wherever.

Why do farmers check pregnant cows?

Preg-checking is a method done to verify a cow's pregnancy status, or if a cow is bred or not. This is done primarily by rectal palpation, though other "non-invasive" methods of preg-checking are being practiced, such as blood testing, ultra-sound, timing of heats, or bumping. Farmers also check pregnant cows when they are close to calving. This is so that the producer estimates what cows are closest to calving and when they might drop a calf. It will also determine if they are close to calving or not.
