Sometimes farmers dump milk rather than sell it as a protest when they believe they are getting unacceptably low prices for their product. They are then saying it is not worth raising the cows in the first place, and the images of the dumping make for useful publicity.

It is the same with farmers and they would rather let the crop rot in the field than to sell it for a lower price.
