Don't cut lettuce with a knife; tear it instead. Before you refrigerate it, put it into a plastic bag and twist to seal. It will stay crisp for quite a while. The same technique works for celery and other vegetables. There are special lettuce containers available but they're a waste of money; a simple plastic bag does the job just fine.

What does tap water do to lettuce?

If you put the lettuce in fresh water there are more salts in the leaf than in the water, so the water will move back into the cells and make them rigid again, because the cells will swell. So if your lettuce in limp, laying it in water will make it crisp again.

Why do lettuce go limp when left in the sun Is it because the lettuce cell release water from the vacuole - causing the lettuce to become limp?

yes. the water in the cell evaporates through the cell wall, removing the structure that keeps the cell in a rigid, fixed shape.

How early before serving should lettuce salad be made?

This would depend on what is in the salad, if you are going to prepare it and then refrigerate it, and if you leave the dressing off until you serve it. If the salad has cucumbers, tomatoes, or other vegetables that contain a lot of natural moisture, it can cause your lettuce to become limp. If you make the salad(s) then refrigerate, it will remain crisp and brightly colored. If you combine your dressing with the salad too far in advance, it will cause the lettuce to become limp, as well. Ideally, if all of these guidelines are followed, you can make it about a day ahead of time. Also, if you are cutting your own lettuce up, and aren't eating the salad immediately, you should TEAR the leaves, and NOT use a knife. The reaction with the knife and lettuce is what causes the brown edges on the leaves.

How do get limp celery crisp again?

First of all, you need to cut the celery into about six pieces or more. However you want. Top it off with whip cream or even better...sour cream. You can also top it of with salsa or cream cheese. You can also bake it if you like!:) I'm not sure if this is a celery crisp, but its good!

Why lettuce leaf in contact with plain water is crispy while a lettuce leaf in contact within salad dressing containing salt and vinegar becomes wilted and limp?

it is to do with the water potential

If lettuce leaves are left in salt water too long why do they become limp?

lettuce is made out of little sacks of water called cells, and normally they are full of water and nice and rigid, so the lettuce is springy and firm. Now the walls of these cells are made of a stuff a bit like a really fine netting that will let water through but not salt (a partially permiable membrane). Now water and salt prefer being mixed together than seperated, and water will move through the cell wall towards whichever side is the saltiest, this is called osmosis. This means that because outside is saltier the water leaves the cells, so the cells empty, and like a half full bag of water, go all floppy so the whole lettuce leaf goes floppy Now if you put the leaf in fresh water there are more salts in the leaf than in the water, so water will move back into the cells making them blow up like balloons again and become all strong and rigid.

Why does a picked lettuce become limp when left in the sun?

yes This is due to the plant losing moisture, mostly water, as it is that which keeps leaves rigid the picked plant becomes limp. This happens to a certain extent with all plants - it is very noticeable in ones with thin leaves (as evaporation of moisture is quicker).

Explain why limp carrot sticks become crisp and your fingers becomes wrinkle when placed in hot water?

It is because of osmosis. Water enters the carrot cells whereas it travels in the opposite direction in your finger.
