Civil marriage is a form of partnership (2-person) contract imposing certain responsibilities on spouses, and granting them certain privileges. In the US at least, none of these responsibilities or privileges have anything to do with "the Plumbing". Denying same-sex couples the right to enter such contracts is a violation of the principle of equal rights.
