Africa contains an significant diversity of ethnicity, religions, cultures, languages. Historically the most common division from of Africa is through religion and north south division using the Saharan Desert. North Africa has sizable Arab populations and is in close proximity to Europe. The North African states of Morocco, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, and the Sudan have majority Arab and Muslim populations. South of the Sahara you have Black-African groups, many of whom are of animists and Christian faiths, that is non-Islamic. This has created a division between the North and rest of Africa. The recent Civil War and partition of the Sudan happened for many of these exact reasons.
