gerbils thump there hind legs to talk to one another and to warn other gerbils that it is their territory. Gerbils thump their legs when they are feeling threatened, scared, annoyed or being territorial. They also do it to warn other gerbils of food, predators or to tell them to go away. I have alos find that they do it when excited because when I bring apple of toilet roll (their favourite things) they thump their legs out of excitement. Basically it is to show any extreme emotions they may be feeling.

Gerbils thump to warn their clan of danger, much like rabbits--everyone remembers Thumper, right? The male will also thump before mating to signify interest.

Why would a male gerbil thump his foot against the bottom of his cage at 5?

If he is with another female it mite me they are mating. But otherwise gerbils thump their hind feet because they are excited and it is a way of letting other gerbils know that somthing exiting is happening. It is totally normal and is somtimes funny to watch.

they might like each other!! It's part of how they communicate. Gerbils thump their legs when they are feeling threatened, scared, annoyed or being territorial. They also do it to warn other gerbils of food, predators or to tell them to go away. I have also find that they do it when excited because when I bring apple of toilet roll (their favourite things) they thump their legs out of excitement. Basically it is to show any extreme emotions they may be feeling to each other and you.
