There are different breeds because they were all made for one reson. Like the golden retrievers it was made to retrieve birds that went into water when shot. Other breeds can swim but the golden retriever has webed paws and big lungs to help it when he/she is retrieving. Also the soft mouth was so when retrieving the bird it would not do any damage to the bird.
