Without being able to do a "hands-on" troubleshooting of your electrical system, NO ONE can identify the specific defect causing the problem.
There are probably many things which could cause this problem, but it sounds like a loose or corroded connection somewhere in the circuit, or it could be a worn switch.
Headlights should not be left on while the vehicle is not in use. If you are not driving, you will just drain your battery while having your headlights on.

If it's raining enough for wipers on you have to have headlights on. Intermittent wiper its not required.

I think you mean, "Why do my headlights turn of while I'm driving" There might be an issue with your fuses or eletrical system.
Your battery is weak, or your your alternator is not charging battery.
Speedometer, fuel gauge, and temperature gauge.
Increased glare from lights, especially oncoming headlights when driving at night.
Just on the front of your car on either side to help you see in the dark while you are driving!

Usually the gauge in on the dashboard with all the other gauges. That way you can read it while driving.
