The cause is the German and Austro-Hungarian imperialism.
'Leave' is really the wrong word to use. Germany was beaten by the Allies and signed an armistice (a cease fire) on 11 November 1918. Treaties bringing a formal end to the war were signed at Versailles in France in 1919. Some people might argue that WW II was a re-run of WW I, so you might say that Germany and the Allies never really ceased WW I, but that's a matter for historians to argue over.
The periods used to divide world history by historians are the Middle Ages, Late Middle Ages, Dark Ages, Stone Age, Iron Age, Bronze Age, pre-war, post-war, and many others to mark events, prehistory, and notable periods.
Historians have agreed on 1 September 1939 until 2 September 1945
It is probably impossible to argue what had the greatest impact on world history, it did of course have a massive impact and we still see its legacy now, but there are other things that have had an impact that is still with us (from the Roman Empire through to the Cold War). I think this probably counts as either a question that cannot be answered, or one that should be answered simply as "No".
Historians still argue about it. It comes down to Serbia or Austria-Hungary.

I presume you ask this regarding the First world war. In which case some historians argue that nationalism was the cause for imperialism. they argue that countries loved themselves so much they would colonise in many other countries. An example of this is German occupation of colonies surrounding south Africa in the early 1900s putting Britain on edge and being a cause for the first world war.
they're not
The answer to that sort of question is always a matter of opinion. Historians will argue over such matters for a long time to come, hindsight is always '20 20 vision'.
It was supposed to be "the war to end all wars."
They certainly helped, any many historians will argue the war may not have been won by the Allies without German losses on the battlefield with the Russians. Russia lost approximately 20 million people in world war 2 as they were under direct attack by Germany
