They coast so much because they have a very high mass. When they gain speed they have a large amount of kinetic energy. So when a horse at a high speed starts to coast by sliding over a large patch of ice it takes a long time for them to stop.
Well, its not so much that flies like the horses, its mostly the manure the horses leave.
