a group of horses is called a heard so therefore are a heard animal. all heard animals like to be in numbers because they are prey to most large predetors (lions ect) theres safety in numbers and the more they are the more eyes and ears there are to watch out for dangers.
horses are also a social animal and like to have interaction with other horses for company just as we would with other people.
also the more there are in a heard the less likely a predator is to pick on them if there was one on its own.
