Unfortunately, horses will probably not like the feel of the bit in their mouth. Since it is an unfamiliar piece of metal in their mouths, it will feel odd and unusual, and some young horses being broken in will not like the feeling and fight it. However, most horses learn to become accustomed to the bit, and accept it. We do not know just what the horses are thinking, but we can assume they are fine with the bit as they do not show signs of discomfort when it is in their mouths.

There are various different types of bits available, either harsh or gentle to help your horse feel comfortable with the bit.

The bit is used to signal the horse to turn, speed up, slow down, or back up. The type of bit used will depend on how it sends the signal to the horse, some bits should only be used by trained professionals with soft, gentle hands.

The bit of the bridle is used to direct and control the horse (or pony) wearing it. Think of it like the handlebars on your bike; they can brake and turn left and right. Bits come in many different sizes, styles, and shapes, all to customize their affect on the wearer. Western bits, for example, are designed to fit the style of a western rein, which is much longer and is in two seperate parts. Western bits won't require as much movement by the rider to get the same affect, and are therefore more sensitive. The classicall bit, however, is shorter and follows one consecutive loop from one end of the bit to the other. Bits are optional (much like saddles) and riders can choose to train their horse with a reined halter that doesnt have a mouthpiece. So, basically, bits are worn to steer and ride the horse, but are not essential in doing so.

Horses wear bits because that makes it easier for the rider to control the horse and where it goes.

Because they are stronger and naughtier, so they need something harsher.

What bit is proper for an English horse show?

It depends on the horse's mouth. Some have hard mouths and are reluctant to light pressure so an harsher bit is needed while others have soft mouths and reply to little amounts of pressure from the bit. Generally horses respond to snaffle bits but most of the aids from the rider come from their seat and legs as opposed to their hands.

Information about why horses need to be trained?

Horses are wild animals, training them can be a long hard process. Some horses don't need to be trained. Others you have to do extensive work with them in order to even get near them. Depending on what you wish to do with the horse, will decide on whether or not they need training for the discipline

Where can someone find more information about horse bits?

Information on horse bits can be found by asking at the stable the horse is kept if that is the case. Otherwise some information can be obtained from books in local libraries or bookstores. It is also worth asking the local vet if they deal with horses a lot.

Do bits hurt horses?

It is very difficult to not inflict some level of pain to a horse when they have a bit, because the bit relies on pain to make a horse do stuff. If you ever do much more than take the slack out of the reins, you are going to cause the horse some level of discomfort. If you try to pull a horse to the left right or to a stop with the reins, you are going to hurt him, and if you ever yank on the reins in frustration, the amount of pain is unbelieveable, because a horses mouth is so sensitive. Bits on their own do not hurt horses, but when operated by a human, there has probably for every horse been some time when pain was inflicted on them by the bit.

Are western horses better trained than English horses because western horses don't need a tight rein?

No. Western and English horses are trained to do two different things. I've ridden both styles and the horses are just trained differently to a point. Most western riders use curb bits that add more pressure to a horses mouth if the reins are pulled on. To avoid hurting the mouth they ride with a loose rein and usually teach a horse to neck rein. English riders typically use some form of snaffle bit and prefer to keep their horses in a more collected frame. But many English riders also teach their horses to neck rein.

How many bits are it byte?

One BYTE is always 8 BITs. (Binary digITs) Some data protocols use a different number of bits to define a character, most systems today use 8 bits, some older systems used 5 bits or 7 bits. But a BYTE is always 8 bits regardless. (a NIBBLE is half a byte - 4 bits).
