The microwave heats food by agitating the bond between the hydrogen and oxygen molecules in water. The more water in food, the more steam is created from this heating process. Eggs contain a lot of water, so when the steam is created, and it is trapped inside the shell, the pressure inside the egg increases and increases until it exceeds the capacity of the shell to contain it, and the egg explodes.

This same principle applies with other foods: any food that contains a good deal of moisture and has a skin that does not permit the steam to escape will likely do something similar. This is why you are supposed to prick the skin of a potato with a fork before you cook it in a microwave.

Peeps, the popular Easter candy, are made of marshmallow and when they are heated in a microwave, they expand significantly. They don't exactly explode but they can triple in size. Some Peeps fans like to eat their Peeps microwaved because they enjoy the warm, ooey, gooey marshmallow, similar to eating a s'more.

See related links for photos of a microwaved Peep. Be careful!

I'm not %100 positive but I'm pretty sure that what the peeps are made of liquefies and the heat acts as a catalyst and it makes a chemical reaction which makes the peep blow up.

A microwave heats food from the inside. If it has a high moisture content and no way to vent, the steam that is generated is going to cause it to blow up. it is funny.

Do hot dogs explode if you don't cut them?

No, hot dogs will not usually explode when cooked. Sometimes they will split open though. However in a microwave cooker hot dogs (like many other foods) can explode if their "skin" is not pierced to let out the steam generated during cooking. But even here they don't need to be cut, just poke two or three holes in them.

I can microwave 1 hot dog in 30 seconds how many hot dogs can I microwave in 1 hour?

If you are microwaving one hot dog every 30 seconds, you could, at that rate, microwave 120 in one hour. The silly thing about this question is that if you needed to microwave 120 hot dogs you would put them all in the microwave together and set the time for 5 or 10 minutes. You also did not say how many microwave ovens you might have. If you had several, you could be microwaving tons of hot dogs.
