What happens is the there will be a short time of calm and clear sky. This is not the time to go outside. For in a few minutes the other side of the storm will hit. Winds will then come from the opposite direction.

If you are near the shore this is when the storm surge will be coming in. Storm surge is the most dangerous part of a hurricane. A giant wall of water comes ashore and drowns everything in its path. This is where the greatest number of deaths come from a hurricane.

Cyclones are so-named because they are great circling storm systems. In the northern hemisphere they circle counterclockwise (seen from above), and in the Southern Hemisphere they circle clockwise.

Given this circular flow, the air on one side of the storm is moving at about the same speed, but in the opposite direction as the air on the other side. So if you enter the eye, which is at the storm's rotational center, and pass through it on a straight line, you will encounter directionally opposite winds as you exit. Moreover, they will increase very rapidly once the eye wall arrives.

A hurricane is a spinning storm system and the eye is at the center of rotation, so when the eye passes you are now on the other side of the storm's center.
