It's larger simply because of the way the land in the area formed due to volcanic eruptions.

The larger population is most likely due to the larger size of the island as people chose to settle on the larger land and urban centers began to spring up.

because the volanic activity, it has produced ash and rock in more than one place in the same area (which is what causes the islands) so more than one island 'popped up'
