When Scout and Jem went to Calpurnia`s church, they saw there wasn`t any hymn books to read the songs. People looked at the two white children as if they were aliens and one women even said they had no right to be there but Calpurnia pointed out to the women that they were all worshiping the same God.

Jem and Scout go to church with Calpurnia to better understand the African American community in Maycomb. Atticus does not attend church with them because he believes everyone has the right to worship in their own way and he wants to respect their independence and beliefs.

Scout learns that Calpurnia speaks in a vernacular language with her fellow African Americans. Different from the way she speaks with the Finches, which is perfect English. She knows how to speak with correct grammar, but she is one of the only African Americans who can, so she chooses not to, not wanting to be an outcast.
