It is the judge who determines the sentence - not the jury.

Often people are accused of several simultaneous crimes all arising from a series of interconnected incidents. For example, breaking into a house; stealing valuables from the house; raping an occupant of the house; fleeing in a stolen vehicle, and resisting arrest.

Each of these crimes carries a different maximum sentence that may be imposed by law. If, for example, there had been 2 people killed in the break-in then there could be 2 life sentences.

In the interests of efficiency the suspect is tried for all of the offences at the same time. But the suspect is not always found guilty of all the crimes and the judge takes that into consideration when passing sentence. Sometimes the judge will say something like 2 years for breaking and entering, 6 months for theft, 10 years for rape, 6 months for auto theft and 1 year for resisting arrest the sentences to be served concurrently. That means the sentences are not all to be added together but are to be served at the same time. The criminal in this example would be imprisoned for up to a maximum of 10 years because that is the longest sentence. Of course, they might be eligible for parole before then, and the judge may determine the period of non-eligibility for parole when sentencing as well.
