I can't speak for all religions, but in Christianity, all adopted into God's family are naturally able to be called sisters in our spiritual family.

If they call you sister you think fondly of you; as if you are family. They have no romantic interest in you though. They will be your friend and if you do need protection you will get it from them.
when they call a women sister, then it is not necessary that they must be related to each other. they refer to a lady a sister just with respect. or they feel more attached and caring to that women when she shares a sisterly relationship with them. as in relationships it is not required that you got to be committed to a women or she need to be your associate some how to be in your contact.
